Dos and Don'ts of Dressing For a Company Holiday Party

work holiday party

'Tis the season for holiday parties with your colleagues. But dressing for such an occasion can be tricky. While you can be a little more daring with your outfit choice, you still have to stay within a professional persona. To help you look your best at the upcoming festivities, we've put together a list of foolproof dos and don'ts.

Do: go bold with accessories. The holiday office party is the perfect time to break out your statement jewelry, patterned tights, or bright heels that you reserve for the weekends. Just try not to pile everything on at once.

Don't: wear anything revealing. This one might sound obvious, but in addition to avoiding short hemlines or low necklines, that includes this season's trendy sheer tops that show your bra. Bottom line: if you wouldn't wear it in front of your mom, don't wear it to a work party.

Do: go for metallics and sequins. There's nothing wrong with dressing in the holiday spirit, but remember to balance it out. If you're wearing a sparkly gold top, pair it something neutral on the bottom, like a black skirt.

Don't: wear an ugly New Years sweater. Or any other variation on themes that include antlers or a New Years hat. No matter what your work environment is like, you still want to keep things classy.

Do: take chances. And by taking chances, we mean trying something unexpected but still appropriate. We love the idea of dressing up in a men's-style tuxedo or breaking out a vintage dress you'd never wear to work.

Don't: dress too casually. The people you work with have spent time putting the party together, and if you show up in jeans or wrinkled clothes, it might seem like you don't appreciate their efforts.
